Hincker... It is risky behavior to chance sickening yourself by smoking cigarettes. However, it is a personal choice. The government forcing uranium mining and milling on a population that will sicken generations of Virginians and North Carolinians for is quite different. Relative risk is the risk of an event or developing disease relative to exposure; a ratio of the probability of the event occurring in the exposed group versus the non-exposed group. At present it is unknown what the relative risks are regarding uranium mining/milling in the Commonwealth. But, the risk of decreased funding to VT’s Dept. of Geo-Sciences is better understood; hence Hincker’s sarcasm.
There are risks and then there are risks
Editor, Times-Dispatch:
Regarding the Commentary column, "Unedifying report meets inept questions," by Andrea Jennetta: I was struck by the irony in the photograph accompanying her illuminating column on the report concerning possible uranium mining in Virginia.

The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes in Montana are seeking to have a mountain peak listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the hope of calling attention to a copper and silver mining company’s plans to burrow beneath it. The tribe has traditionally used the site, Chicago Peak, for praying, fasting and seeking visions.
A listing on the register would not legally prevent the mine from going forward. Still, the tribes hope to turn public opinion against the “hollowing out” of a spiritual site and to avert negative environmental impacts from the project, Rock Creek Mine.
Revett MineralsThe Rock Creek mine would tunnel under Chicago Peak, a site that holds cultural significance for Indian tribes. “The peak is related to origin stories that took place during the time of creation of the Kootenai world,” said Maria Nieves Zedeño, an anthropologist at the University of Arizona who has researched the peak for the nomination of an associated site, Kootenai Falls. “It’s one of the most significant sites to the Kootenai because of its association with knowledge and power.”
The tribes’ argument on historic and cultural grounds is the latest in a string of challenges to the controversial $300 million mining project, planned by Revett Minerals of Canada. The site lies within the federally designated Cabinet Mountains Wilderness, but Revett secured approval because the minerals were identified before the 1964 Wilderness Act was passed.

Comments: "Whether the issue is tolls, a new Metrorail line, or uranium mining, Gov. McDonnell has come out on the side of special interests and ideology over and above the people of Virginia."
To show Virginians just how much he empathizes with those Virginia Beach residents who were displaced by a Navy fighter jet that crashed into their apartment complex, Gov. Bob McDonnell announced late last week that he’s giving these individuals an extra 30 days to pay and file their taxes.
It’s good to know that the governor is in touch with the people of Virginia. All the more so because such important issues are on the legislative and executive table at the moment which could cost Virginians more time, money, and years of life lost.
Whether the issue is tolls, a new Metrorail line, or uranium mining, Gov. McDonnell has come out on the side of special interests and ideology over and above the people of Virginia.
Just as those residents of Virginia Beach whose apartments were damaged can’t be expected to file taxes that have been damaged or destroyed by the deadline, Virginian’s can’t be expected to endure a greater loss of income, longer commutes, and the possibility of radioactive isotopic disasters.
