The Icing on the Cake

Heels in the Sand

19 May 2012 05:44:44

Some folks love the feeling of their toes in the sand, but this cake was made with a different idea in mind.  Who needs a flip flop when you can have a rocking stiletto - especially one that's edible!  This cake accompanied a really great group of girls to the beach to help celebrate two birthdays.  Each of the birthday girls got their own shoe and everybody got a slice of fudge marble cake and a couple of white chocolate shells.I have to give The Cake Engineer credit for the shoe design.  Her tutorial giving step-by-step directions for this fun shoe is the bomb!

A Math Teacher Graduates

19 May 2012 05:43:41

Our family did a little celebrating last weekend at NC State's graduation with a yummy red velvet cake.  Mr. Wuf is ready to head out into the world with all of his math books and teacher supplies.  This fall there will be some really lucky high school students because they'll have a terrific math teacher!I have to give my friend Erica at Sweet Flamingo Cake Co. a big shout-out.  She is terrific sugar artist and I used one of her cakes as inspiration for my own Mr. Wuf.  Thanks, Erica!

Golfer's Birthdays

02 May 2012 18:24:18

Three golf cakes for 60th birthday celebrations!  First, a cake featuring some of the birthday boy's favorite things:  golf, the mountains, the Yankees and his ultimate dream car (the Jaguar XKE) turned into a golf cart.Next, sixty sugar golf balls helped to surprise a golf enthusiast at The Angus Barn in Raleigh.  It was very appropriate that on the day of his party there was a big high school golf tournament.  Remarkably, even though we all spent the whole day together, no one spoiled the surprise!Last, but not least, an edible golf cart to top a tower of 80 cupcakes, each featuring a white chocolate golf ball.  I delivered these treats to Raleigh Country Club for a surprise birthday party.

Chica Cake

29 April 2012 04:45:08

I made this 12" round cake for the party guests at a first birthday party and a little smash cake for the birthday girl to enjoy all by herself. She loves the Sunny Side Up show on Sprout TV and this cute chicken, Chica, is her favorite character.Every time I design a cake, I have a plan in mind when I start... but that plan always evolves as I get into the project.  In this case, I hadn't even thought of making the birthday girl's name quite so large or in the cow print.  But as I was making the sugar pieces, I felt like the cake needed one more big element to balance the barn and Chica.  And I am so glad that I did it - it's my favorite part of the cake!  On the set of the Sunny Side Up show, there is a chair painted in a cow print, so that was the inspiration for the pattern.  I made the cow spots out of black fondant and rolled them into the white fondant to create a smooth surface before cutting out each letter by hand.

The Princess and The Pea

15 April 2012 16:23:14

Once upon a time, there was birthday party for a real princess.  But, unlike the Princess and the Pea, she didn't have to prove she was royalty by sleeping on twenty mattresses with a pea hidden underneath.  She just had to put on her crown and start the celebration!  The princess and her friends played games and rode in a horse-drawn carriage and ate cake - a royal event, for sure! The birthday princess wanted to include a frog too, even though, technically, there's not one in the traditional story.  But hey, when you're a princess you can make your own fairy tale, right?  I love that!Does anyone else remember "Once Upon a Mattress" starring Carol Burnett as Princess Winifred the Woebegone?  It's my favorite version of this story!

Hello, Kitty!

Happy Birthday, Keygan!  I wish I had taken a picture of the birthday girl when she came to get her cake.  Her smile was worth all the time it took to make this cake!

Meow!

14 April 2012 09:25:20

This yummy orange Persian is helping to celebrate a milestone birthday and is surrounded by the birthday girl's favorite flowers and edible playing cards.  I hear she plays a mean game of canasta.  Keep making those melds, Melinda!

A Sporty Cake

01 April 2012 11:31:06

I made this birthday cake for a boy who loves sports - all sports!  That's him on the top in his goalie gear making a save. He's also a baseball, football and basketball fan, so he's good to go any season of the year!

A cake for a grandfather's 70th birthday celebration... kind of like an edible family vacation!
