Track the development of a CBR/CBZ Digital Comic Book Viewer, using 3D Graphics Hardware to allow for a smooth zooming and panning experience.

Version 1.0 released

02 August 2009 07:49:35

Hi folks,The old version of the viewer timed out, so I've just rebuilt and uploaded a Version 1.0. This won't time out any more.I didn't get time to make many changes, but I have added in PDF viewer support. When you extract the new .EXE, make sure that you also extract the "gs" folder. If the application finds this folder, it'll automatically add in the option to view PDFs.Here's the download link...http://www.cando3d.com/test_lab/3DComicBookViewer.zipEnjoy!Mal

This update now has a few new features and fixes...- I managed to ( finally ) get the auto-fit-page-to-screen-width function working ( its on by default in this version ).This is getting very near a final release, hopefully the next one will be v1.0!As always, all comments and suggestions are welcome. Here's the link...http://www.candointeractive.com/3dcomicbookviewer/3DComicBookViewer.zipEnjoy!Mal

I didn't get round to the auto-scale-width feature ( will def work on this next ).However, this update now has a few new features and fixes...- The stretching should be fixed now- If you hold down the left mouse button without dragging ( which will drag the page ), you will toggle zoom in and out. This allows for very simple viewing with a single click ( Mac users / Tablet PC users ).Here's the link...http://www.candointeractive.com/3dcomicbookviewer/3DComicBookViewer.zipEnjoy!Mal

This update now has better mouse scrolling functionality. Just click and drag, and you'll be able to scroll around the page. You can quickly drag and let go of the mouse button to get a nice scroll effect. This makes it pretty easy to read pages using just the mouse, as right clicking toggles zooming in or out ( the mouse wheel also controls the zoom ).I also fixed a potential issue with the loading order of comic books, if you are reading a number of CBZ/CBR files from the same folder. Here's the link...http://www.candointeractive.com/3dcomicbookviewer/3DComicBookViewer.zipFeel free to post any comments or suggestions that you would like to see in the final version!MalPS If there are any good comic forums that you visit, who might find this viewer interesting, could you let me know ( or could you post and send them to this link )? I'd like to get as much feedback on the viewer as possible, before releasing version 1.

This is an update of the viewer, for those who are finding previous versions timing out.- Pressing S now gives a fancier slide show / screen saver style effect. The viewer zooms in on a few different areas of the current image, as well as rotating a bit, before rotating to the next page.- Pressing will rotate the image interactively ( for no real reason, other than it's easy to do with 3D )- This version will time out at the end of June. By then, I hope to have a version 1 complete.Download InstructionsDownload and extract the files from the ZIP below...http://www.candointeractive.com/3dcomicbookviewer/7/3DComicBookViewer7.zipInstructions on how to use the viewer can be viewed in the previous blog posts ( especially the first posting at the bottom of the page ).I'll be working on the mouse dragging next ( the current way is definitely too weird - the new way will allow the user to grab a particular part of the page, and drag it around, similar to pressing SPACE and dragging in a PDF )Feel free to post any comments or suggestions that you would like to see in the final version!Mal

Updates- New slide-show option - press S to start and stop it. Pages will continually rotate, only pausing when the full page is shown to reload the next page.- More loading optimisation code, to minimise the time spent loading and creating 3D textures of the new images.- Multi-screen support - move the full-screen view to other monitors by pressing F to flip to the next screen.Download InstructionsDownload and extract the files from the ZIP below...http://www.candointeractive.com/3dcomicbookviewer/6/3DComicBookViewer6.zipInstructions on how to use the viewer can be viewed in the previous blog posts ( especially the first posting at the bottom of the page ).Enjoy!!!

This is a minor update, as I haven't had as much time to spend on this as I would have liked.Updates- Your screen aspect should now be taken into account, so pages shouldn't appear a bit too scaled across the way.- I've optimised the loading code, so loading new pages should be faster.Download InstructionsDownload and extract the files from the ZIP below...http://www.candointeractive.com/3dcomicbookviewer/5/3DComicBookViewer5.zipInstructions on how to use the viewer can be viewed in the previous blog posts ( especially the first posting at the bottom of the page ).Enjoy!!!

Prototype #1 of 3D Comic Book Viewer

28 January 2008 06:22:15

Having recently enjoyed re-reading some of my favourite graphic novels in CBR and CBZ format, I've decided to write a viewer with a few new features that weren't in the few viewers that I was using. This included the ability to smoothly zoom in and pan around each comic book page. This zooming and panning smoothly is possible as the program uses your 3D graphics card to view the various pages - while ensuring that the image quality is preserved.I've decided to release prototypes of the viewer during development, to get feedback from the wider community on what they would like a viewer to have also.Download InstructionsDownload and extract the files from the ZIP below...http://www.candointeractive.com/3dcomicbookviewer/1/3DComicBookViewer.zipWhen you run the "3DComicBookViewer" program, you will be presented with an Open Comic dialog box.Keys and Controls for Viewing Comics To move on to the next page, use either - left mouse button, SPACE, Page Down or +.To move on to the next page, use either - right mouse button, BackSpace, Page Up or -.Use the Arrow Keys and Q and A to zoom and pan around the image. To open or load a new comic book, press O or L.Press ESC to quit the viewer.I hope you enjoy using the viewer, and give feedback on what you would like to see. While I'm initially going to focus on the viewer ( ie per comic features ), there could also be a larger "Comic Book Manager" development later on.Of course, I'd also like to hear what people might pay for a quality comic reader product ( if anything! - of course, to be realistic $0 development budget = less resources, some $ means I can spend more resources on this project etc )I look forward to hearing your feedback!Mal
