Ever wonder what it is like to support computers at a University. Here's my suggestion:

(1) Go by three 1000 piece puzzles, dump them into a single pile and mix them up.
(2) Now randomly pick out 1000 pieces and throw the rest in the trash.
(3) Put together the remaining pieces to create your new puzzle.

That's about what it feels like to support all the various operating systems and tools expected of an information technology specialist.

Easy Shopping For Busy Moms Like Me
Shopwiki Toys - Tow TruckWhen I was still a full-time regular working mom doing a 9-hour office routine, I used to think that when I finally get to settle down as a stay-at-home mom, I can probably have more time. Aside from having more time for my son (which is actually the main thing), I thought, as a bonus, I can also have more time for myself and for the things I love doing like going to malls, etc. Well, I guess I was somehow wrong because I'm still as busy as ever. :( The time that I used to spend in the office has now been replaced by household chores and work on the internet. No, I'm not complaining. Being with my son all day long is still the best choice and it's been heaven ever since.

As for 'malling', well, although I still get to do that once in a while, I've found a more convenient way of "window shopping" right inside the comforts of our home. And what would a mom of a 3-year-old usually shop for? Of course, things for babies and toddlers! Shopwiki's Babies and Toddler Products Buying Guide is simply an excellent alternative to the hustle and bustle of physically going through toy stores, bookstores and clothing stores hundreds of meters apart with a super-duper-hyper Thiel in tow.

You see, Shopwiki has this search feature that is much like how Google functions and more. This means that search results would return everything that's for sale on the internet and not only those stores that have paid for advertisement, which is what usually happens on other traditional shopping sites. What's more is that aside from the stores, Shopwiki even gives very helpful buying tips. Just take a look at their Toddler Clothing Buying Guide . Those tips are already freebies which make internet browsing/shopping a wonderful and valuable experience.

Under Toys and Games Buying Guide, I tried to search for Thiel's favorite toy and typed "tow truck" on the search box. It returned several items but one that, I'm sure, will get Thiel very interested is the "Tow Truck Game". It was so easy to choose from 8 different stores with different prices for exactly the same product. Of course who wouldn't choose the cheapest and it's only worth $6.99 while others sell it for $7.99, $8.48 and $9.99. Wow, talk about convenience!

Well, that's it for my latest online discovery. Just sharing it with busy moms like me ;)

Video Game Addiction

Studies show that the excitement of video games makes playing them addictive. Parents of preteens hardly find this surprising.Ask any preteen how they love to spend their spare time, and chances are you'll get an earful about video games. But why do they love them so? Are they addictive? According to some studies it would appear that the excitement of video games causes the brain to release a chemical that is, in essence, addictive. For any parent who has seen the fervor by which some kids play video games, this news is no surprise. What makes these games so addictive? Media literacy specialist, Dr. Charles Ungerleider explains that "they're very compelling with increasing complexity, so a child becomes more facile, yet wants to know more and apply new skills." While wanting to improve their game isn't a problem in itself, it becomes one if video games are "taking a youngster away too much from other activities," says Ungerleider. "Then the parent has to intervene and limit the amount of time the youngster spends with the video game." Professor of Computer Science, Maria Klavee feels video games, if not too violent, can "offer some real opportunities for puzzle solving, strategic and critical thinking". But she adds that it's important that video and computer games are played in moderation. Klavee says parents should "provide a selection of activities, not just the ones that have the most action or are addictive. Choose some that involve problem solving or good story lines. Also aim for a balance in your child's life. Sports are important, reading's important. Just think of computer games as one more component in a child's exploration of what's out there in society." As for addiction? Ungerleider believes that "a parent can prevent youngsters from becoming addicted to too much TV or too many video games by establishing a pattern of selective viewing or by using video game material early in a child's life so that by the time a youngster gets to be an adolescent and there's very little surveillance or control, it's less likely to occur." Finally, Ungerleider remind parents that "if a youngster becomes addicted to video games it can be a problem and the parent does need to intervene and provide attractive alternatives."
