=== SHOES & MORE ===

Many of you have probably noticed Zappos now sells, in addition to shoes, clothing, handbags, and accessories. Who has bought something that *wasn't* shoes on Zappos recently?

=== GREASE ON LEATHER ===
=========================
Can your readers suggest a way to remove a grease spot from light tan leather shoes. I've used leather cleaner but it did not remove the stain. I'm afraid to use anything else for fear the stain will get even darker than it is. Can anyone help?
Thank you!

I wear a size 15 shoe and have a hard time finding socks that fit. The socks I buy now do not come up high enough.

=== ROCKER SOLED SHOES ===
==========================
"What are the best rocker bottom or rocker soled shoes? And how do they help with bad feet? I have large toesthat can't bend more than 5-10 degrees and have used ballet pads in the past. Please advise."
-June
I have to wear rocker soles for a foot problem. First I got Dansko black leather clogs and they look fine. But I needed sandals for a cruise in just a few days, the sales person sent me to Earth Shoes.
They have a negative heal which may not be for everyone but I love them.
They take care of my foot problem, give me better posture and feel great. I have quite a few now. Highly recommended.

=== TRAVELING TO EUROPE ===
===========================
"Can you suggest comfortable but stylish (not clunky) shoes that I can wear for long hours sightseeing this summer in Greece, Turkey and Paris?
I would like a casual sandal to wear with Bermuda shorts, Capri pants and slacks and a dressier shoe to wear for evenings and sightseeing in Paris...I have a narrow foot..."
-Joyce Mason
Regarding trying to find comfortable but attractive shoes for travel, I don't think you can beat SoftWalk shoes, and they come in narrow. I am addicted to these shoes.

I also have very narrow feet. I find Easy Spirit shoes and sandals are the best. Their narrow show is AAA with a 5A (AAAAA) heel. I cannot wear most narrow shoes as I walk out of them. The East Spirit shoes are a much better fit. Zappos has many narrow Easy Spirit shoes. Have a great trip.

=== GOING BAREFOOT ===

"...Is it ever appropriate to go barefoot in public?"
-Tara, Moderator
From reading all the posts on hygiene and health risks, I think most of us agree that as a general rule going barefoot in the US is pretty much a no-no (with the exception of certain situations). My brother used to enjoy going barefoot a lot, and is an avid outdoorsman (fishing, atv's,
etc.) I introduced him to the Vibram Five-finger Shoes (heard about them from this newsletter!). He loved them, bought them and wears them a lot. It's like being barefoot, but with protection! A great alternative for those who love to be barefoot but want to take care of their feet.

Barefoot in public is COMPLETELY ACCEPTABLE. It is up to YOU, not others, some social norm, or even the law in some cases. To wear or not to wear shoes is a freedom not taken away yet. While I don't always go around barefoot, there are just simply too many falsities provided here:
It is NOT too dangerous, or "more dangerous than when I was a little kid." Simply not true. Antidotal at best.
It is NOT more dangerous here than say "in a third world country," ha, have you seen Kenya?...
Bare foot is natural.
I liken it to drinking water in the USA and in Mexico. Americans cannot drink Mexican tap water because they will get sick (ever have Montezuma's revenge?). Yet Mexicans drink it all day long and (usually) don't. Why? Because their body adjusts to the bacteria their government allows, while we try to sterilize ours.
So a foot that has NEVER seen the light of day would be more susceptible to injury or harsh wear and tear if suddenly "uncloaked." Whereas a foot which has had a moderate life of running miles, hiking in forests, walking on cement, buying groceries, fixing cars all without shoes, then a little stroll in public will not hurt one bit.
Thanks,
Romney Mawhorter

I live in a major city and see people walking barefoot in our many parks and public (historic) areas. I also see junkies sharing needles and leaving them there. Homeless folks sleeping and doing "whatever comes natural there" You decide if it is a good idea.

Parasites, etc. etc. Women spend so much time ensuring our bodies, including our feet,are smooth and the skin is soft. Why would you want your bare soles to have the texture of alligator hide?

My thoughts: with the risk of contracting MRSA or other very serious infections, keep it limited to carpeted areas, homes, beach sand, places like that. I have a friend who contracted a staph infection beneath his skin near his elbow. The doctor put him on antibiotics immediately and said "I want to keep you out of the hospital if I can". All he had was a warm slightly red spot, no swelling, no pus. Doctor told him that the infection can be introduced through a microscope skin penetration that you don't even feel, no bleeding, no scab. Think about that when you walk on pavement where diseased people have spit, vomited, or worse.
Not to mention that broken glass particles can be nearly anywhere.
I won't go into the vast possibilities of injuries to your feet, since they are not that visible when you walk.

Barefoot in public....my opinion:
I've been a barefoot girl all my life and havethe calloused feet to prove it. I'm not saying that I am proud of the callouses....I'm just saying they are a natural result of my choice.I do have good health in my feet...my knees and ankles are in good shape and I have high arches.I am a diabetic and my doctor has fits about my barefoot habits, but I am keenly aware of feelings in my feet due to the barefoot custom. I'm 56 years old, not so much a hippie as a free spirit. I can't stand to wear hats on my head, rings on my fingers, or shoes and socks on my feet.
That being said, I do wear shoes in restaurants, at church, walking in treacherous places, etc. Feet are far less infectious than hands, yet we do not demand gloves.
Our country is germophobic and it is putting our overall health at risk.
Our natural immunities need to be kept strong and up to date....just like our antivirus systems on our computers.
Life isn't about surviving the storm...it's about learning to dance in the rain.

=== PATENT SCUFFS ===
=====================
"I recently acquired some stretch patent boots (I'm a performer) and lo and behold, the first go-round they were scuffed. Any suggestions on getting scuff marks off of patent? Also, I took a tiny piece of material off right around the ball of the foot. Any suggestions on a cover-up or fix?"
-Michael
I think a lot of the people responding to the person who got their patent boots scuffed are confusing scuffed shoes with shoes that have marks on the surface.
To me a scuffed boot means the surface has been scraped off, that is the colored shiny surface has been scraped away, revealing the surface below that is not colored the same.
A Sharpie permanent marker will probably restore the color (if you can get a close match, try an art supply store). I do not know how to restore the patent gloss finish.
I would take them to a shoe repair shop to see if they have something that will restore the finish, that is what you need to to to restore them. As a last ditch attempt (when everything else fails) buy a can of glossy spray enamel paint at a good paint store in a close color, practice on a cardboard box a number of times to get a feel for what it takes, then hold your breath and spray paint the enamel paint over the spot. I would do this if you cannot find a shoe store that can refinish the scuffed spot.
